Student Casual Employment

If you are being hired at Columbia Engineering as a Student Casual, you are responsible for completing hiring paperwork and submitting them to the your manager within 72 hours of your first day of work.

During the Fall and Spring semesters, student casual employment may not exceed 20 hours per week across all positions.

During the Summer semester, it is important to adhere to the Standard Work Week and Hours policy. As per this policy, casual employees should not exceed 35 hours per week across all positions.

If you are being hired as a Work-Study, please refer to the Work-Study instructions.

Please adhere to the following instructions on how to submit your paperwork.

Determine The Student Casual Classification

Hourly student casuals serving in general administrative or other functions (e.g., in central administrative units, in the Libraries, Dodge Fitness Center, residence halls, departments, school dean’s offices, etc.) will continue to be categorized as casual-administrative.  Students whose job is to provide only technology support for the delivery of a course in the classroom, online or in a hybrid format, should also be categorized as casual-administrative. Note that the minimum hourly rate of $16/hour continues to apply to this group of casuals.

Hourly student casuals whose job is to perform instructional work for University courses, including as a course assistant or teaching lab assistant, or grading assignments or exams, should be categorized as casual-instructional.  These students should be categorized as casual-instructional even if they perform some ancillary administrative work related to their instructional work.

If you will consistently work 15+ hours per week, do not fill out this paperwork. Instead, contact your prospective manager. Although students can work a maximum of 20 hours per week during the academic year, Student Instructional Workers consistently working more than 15 hours per week should be appointed to a student officer position.

Hourly student casuals performing research activities should be categorized as causal-research. These students should be categorized as casual-research even if they perform some ancillary administrative work related to their research work.

Hourly student casuals whose work directly supports instruction or research but is not itself instructional or research service (e.g. student casuals who provide enrichment services, general tutoring services and learning support through the Department of Athletics or at the Center for Student Advising); student casuals who perform data entry and manipulation in support of research but without analysis that requires subject-matter expertise) should be categorized as casual-academic support. These students should be categorized as casual-academic support even if as part of their casual job they also support additional functions in a department or program such as general administrative work. Students who perform casual work for non-credit non-tuition bearing courses (e.g., in the Double Discovery program, the Summer Bridge Program, the Academic Success Program, etc.) should also be categorized as casual-academic support.

Hourly casuals working in any of the above classifications but are not enrolled in a Columbia University degree program. This is primarily for Teachers College, Barnard College, or other university. Students must be enrolled in some academic program unless performing research work. For example, a recent graduate performing academic and instructional work would be classified as a Non-Student Short-Term Casual.

Non-student casual employees are limited to one job for a maximum of 560 hours or 4 months from initial hire date, whichever comes first, in a 12-month period with limited exceptions.
