Broadway Community Volunteer Event: Engineering for Humanity in Action

Columbia Engineering staff came together to support Broadway Community, a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing food insecurity and promoting human dignity in the Morningside Heights neighborhood. As part of this semester’s “Spring into Action” theme, volunteers stepped away from their regular routines to participate in a hands-on service opportunity that aligned with our School’s mission of Engineering for Humanity.

The group gathered outside 510 Mudd before walking over to Broadway Community, where they assisted with meal service during the organization’s daily lunch program. Volunteer tasks included serving as wait staff, preparing meals, setting tables, engaging with guests, and helping with breakdown and cleanup. This experience gave employees a firsthand look at the organization’s impactful work, which includes food pantries, medical services, and clothing distribution for those in need.

About the Event
This service initiative offered staff the opportunity to engage meaningfully with our local community. By volunteering as part of a team, participants supported Columbia Engineering's vision and strengthened bonds with colleagues outside of the traditional work environment.

Event Impact:

  • Contributed to the fight against local food insecurity
  • Fostered team connection and employee engagement through shared service
  • Reinforced Columbia Engineering’s commitment to community partnership and impact

We look forward to organizing more opportunities for Columbia Engineering staff to connect, serve, and make a difference—both within and beyond our campus.
