A New Space for Sharing and Connection

Columbia Engineering has a new place for the community to share a good read.

The Little Free Library, now located outside the Graduate Admissions Office in Mudd 1220, invites students, faculty, and staff to take a book, leave a book, and discover something new. More than simply a bookshelf, the project was created as a small but meaningful way to foster connection and the exchange of ideas across the Columbia Engineering community.

The idea originated with the Graduate Admissions Team, which envisioned a shared resource that could bring members of the School together through books, reading, and the exchange of ideas.

Bringing that vision to life became a collaborative effort across Columbia Engineering. The HR Admin Team helped coordinate the initiative and shape its community engagement efforts, working across teams to move the project from concept to launch. The Makerspace Team designed and built the library entirely in-house, applying their creativity, craftsmanship, and technical expertise to transform the initial concept into a one-of-a-kind resource for the Engineering community. Throughout the design process, the Communications Team provided creative and visual guidance to ensure the library aligned with Columbia Engineering’s identity and helped shape the look and feel of the finished product.

Dedicated to Columbia Engineering Staff

At the heart of the finished library is a dedication to the staff who help make the School’s work possible. Its plaque reads:

THIS LITTLE FREE LIBRARY IS DEDICATED TO THE COLUMBIA ENGINEERING STAFF

“In support of our mission of Engineering for Humanity — encouraging curiosity, collaboration, and the exchange of ideas
across our community.”

While the library is dedicated to Columbia Engineering staff, it is intended for the entire Columbia Engineering community. Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to browse its shelves, take a book that interests them, or contribute a book for someone else to enjoy.
